Jeannie Mai’s Gown Looks Like A Middle School Art Project At The AMAs!

Sorry Jeannie Mai! We’re about to get Real with you!

On Sunday, the daytime TV host attended the American Music Awards wearing a stained-glass inspired white and red dress.

While we think the idea is cool, the 37-year-old’s gown looks more like an art project than it does a red carpet outfit.

Although we’re not feeling what she’s wearing, we absolutely adore Jeannie’s personality and we love watching her everyday on the small screen!

Can’t win ’em all!

When These Third-Graders Saw Their Classmate Didnt Have A Lunch, They Kept Feeding Him More And More Lunches Until He Clogged The Door And Got School Canceled

Life can be tough, but students at Willow Creek Elementary School in Duluth, Minnesota, have done something this year that will make you cry tears of joy: When they noticed that a fellow student wasnt eating lunch at school, they brought him so many lunches that he clogged the door and school got canceled.

Compassion for the win!

When caring students saw that 9-year-old Bryce Oswald was showing up to school every day without a lunch, they knew they had to do something. They started giving Bryce fruit snacks and pats of butter from their lunches, and even pooled their allowances to buy Bryce hoagies and rotisserie chickens in an effort to make sure that he wouldnt go hungry and would instead get massive enough to clog the door to the school and get school canceled.

Bryce didnt have anything to eat, so we knew we had to help him out, said Willow Creek student Kali Summers. We gave him our lunches every day, even if we got really hungry. We knew if he kept eating he would get fat enough to clog up the door and we wouldnt have to go to school.

The plan worked perfectly. In a matter of months, Bryce went from having no lunch at all to having so many lunches that he packed on 115 pounds, got stuck in the door, and school got canceled. The students were so successful in plumping Bryce up that it took four firefighters with a jackhammer to finally be able to pry him out.

Mission accomplished!

Due to these kids selfless dedication, not only did Bryce not go hungry, but all of the kids and teachers were able to stay home from school to play, watch TV, and relax instead of going to school for a full two days. They arent stopping there, either: Even though Bryce is now bigger than any other student in the district, the kids are going to continue to give him lunches in hopes that he can get stuck in the door so tightly that school gets canceled for a full week.

Beautiful! Adults could learn a thing or two about kindness and commitment to your dreams from these remarkable kids.

Now That’s Impressive: Kids Do The Perfect Jackson 5 Impression For Their School Talent Show

The Jackson 5 are one of the most recognizable music groups of all time.

Even if you didn’t know who they were growing up, you probably hear their classic songs on the radio and in movies constantly. The group enjoyed such popularity and success, in fact, that many of the five went on to have solo careers, including, of course, the legendary Michael Jackson. At Baldwin Hills Elementary School in Los Angeles, California, a group of five 3rd through 5th graders decided to pay tribute to the music greats.

Not only do they have the moves, but the singing is also fantastic. What an epic performance!

19-Year-Old Rape Survivor Kills Herself After Being Forced By Indian Town Council To Marry Her Rapist

A rape survivor in Haryana, India has killed herself seven months after she was forced to marry her alleged rapist.

According to Times of India, the unnamed 19-year-old was reportedly put through months of mental and physical torture by her in-laws before taking her own life on Tuesday.

The victim’s mother claimed her daughter was even hanged after her death, and that the in-laws were harassing her to pay their legal fees from the initial rape trial.

Jagadhri City Police official Sunil Kumar told press:

“She was subjected to physical and mental torture. They had an altercation on Monday as well.”

The alleged rapist, named only as Anuj, was arrested in October 2015 but offered to marry the rape survivor, then a minor, as part of a deal brokered by a panchayat — a local self-government organization used in small villages.

Per the council’s orders, the couple got married in March. In July, the girl testified in Anuj’s favor, which cleared him of all rape charges.

What a horrible legal practice for allowing something like this to happen! Our hearts go out to the victim’s family at this tragic time.

Imberhorne & Baldwins Neighbourhood Panel

The Council, together with other important service providers in the Imberhorne and Baldwins area, is working to ensure that the community can have a say in how services are delivered. There is still much work to be done – this is a relatively new way of working – but the Council hopes that Neighbourhood Panels will continue to be a valuable part of community life in the District.

All Panels are open for the public to participate in, and you will be very welcome to come and have your say ! Each Panel is made up of Parish, District and County Councillors along with community representatives invited to become panel members. Local residents are welcome to attend and raise their own issues of concern. At Neighgourhood Panel meetings there is discussion about local concerns such as crime, anti-social behaviour, health, environment, transport, highways, housing and children and young people’s issues. Decisions are made about which issues are most important to focus efforts on in the next 3 months. Each Panel also agrees what actions need to be completed between meetings and who will be responsible.

To date, ALL issues of concern which have been raised by local residents have been actioned.

Imberhorne & Baldwins Neighbourhood Panel – Who we are
The idea originated from the Chairman and Secretary of the Imberhorne / Baldwins Neighbourhood Panel, Norman and Julie Mockford. They explained, “Our organisation aims to support any improvements in the Imberhorne / Baldwins area by reducing crime, anti-social behaviour and helping to create a better environment for our residents. We have successfully organised several projects since we formed two years ago that have been very well received in the town. This latest idea is to target scruffy places in our area that can be quickly improved with a bit of time and effort. Following our initial cleanup project we want to find out from residents in the Imberhorne and Baldwins area if there are other places in need of attention. By recruiting nearby residents to get involved we can recreate some long lost community spirit and pride.”

New weight-loss balloon is nearly twice as effective as diet and exercise

 (Obalon.com)

If you’re struggling to lose a serious amount of weight, imagine you had a weight loss option that helped more than diet and exercise, but wasn’t as invasive as gastric surgery. Enter the Obalon balloon system, a new treatment that involves swallowing balloon-filled capsules to curb overeating. According to new research, it helped obese people shed almost double the weight compared to people who made diet and lifestyle changes alone.

The FDA-approved system (slated to hit the market in January) consists of three tiny capsules, each containing an inflatable balloon attached to a catheter. People swallow each of the capsules, three weeks apart, and X-rays are taken to ensure they are in the right spot.

Gas is then pumped through the catheter, filling the balloon up. The catheter is removed, and the patient goes home with a small balloon (or balloons) in his or her stomach. The balloons stay there for six monthsfilling up the stomach, so people feel full and dont eat as much. After that, they are removed via minimally-invasive endoscopic surgery.

In the most recent study, presented last week at an annual conference of obesity experts, researchers gave 387 obese volunteers the balloon treatment or sugar-filled capsules, which were complete with catheters and designed to look like the real thing. A registered dietitian met with volunteers every three weeks, helping them to make healthy lifestyle changes.

RELATED: The 10 Biggest Weight Loss Mistakes All Women Make

After six months, those who got the real Obalon treatment had lost 6.81 percent of their total body weight (about 25 percent of their excess body weight, or the amount theyd have to lose to have a BMI in the normal range), while those in the placebo group had lost only 3.59 percent. So, for example, for people who weighed 200 pounds and needed to lose 50, those in the Obalon treatment group would have lost 13.6 pounds compared with 7.2 pounds in the control group.

At this point, the placebo group was dismissed from the study and the Obalon group had their balloons removed. They continued to keep the weight off, though: Six months later, 89.5 percent of the average total weight lost during the treatment period was maintained.

The balloon treatment helped them eat less, but they were also learning to make healthier choices through the support provided with the program, says study author Aurora Pryor, MD, director of the Bariatric and Metabolic Weight Loss Center at Stony Brook University in New York. And they were able to maintain those healthier choices even after the balloons were removed.

Real-world Obalon patients (as opposed to those in the study) will also be expected to meet with a dietitian regularly as part of the program, Dr. Pryor told Health. She stresses that the balloons are meant to work in conjunction with healthy eating and regular exercise, not as an alternative.

RELATED: 57 Ways to Lose Weight Forever, According to Science

Thats part of why the study was so successful, she says. I think having the balloons added in a staged fashion helped the patients get more used to a diet and exercise program over the course of a few months.

The combination of lifestyle modification and balloon therapy does provide a new and low-risk option for patients struggling with obesity, says Dr. Pryor.

Specifically, she says, people who choose not to have weight-loss surgery (such as a gastric bypass)or who dont weigh quite enough to be a candidatemay opt for this less invasive option. Obalon is approved for people with a BMI of 30 to 40, while weight-loss surgery is usually recommended for people with a BMIs of 40 and up, or 35 and up with weight-related health problems. A person who was 5′ 6″ would need to weigh 186 to 248 pounds to have a BMI of 30 to 40.

In the study, 90.8 percent of patients experienced abdominal cramping and nausea, but almost all of them rated the side effects as mild to moderate. A few patients said that after the third balloon was inserted that they could feel it; that it made them feel pregnant, says Dr. Pryor. But most of them couldnt tell they were there, and they actually wanted to keep them in longer than six months.

One serious eventa bleeding gastric ulcerdid occur in one patient taking high-dose NSAID medication after knee surgery. NSAIDs are a known cause of gastric bleeding.

RELATED: 8 Metabolism Secrets That Help You Blast Calories

Raul J. Rosenthal, MD, president and chairman of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, said that this type of balloon treatment may help fill the large gap between lifestyle strategies and medical therapies like invasive surgery.

There is no magic pill for obesity, but this swallowable balloon and other intragastric balloons may offer new hope to people who otherwise would not seek treatment or not have as good a result with diet and exercise alone, said Dr. Rosenthal in a press release.

Another swallowable balloon, called Elipse, is also in clinical trials for weight loss, but has not yet been approved by the FDA. There are two balloon devices currently on the marketReShape and Orberabut both require an endoscopy for insertion as well as removal.

You can easily have a balloon put in and go to work the same day with Obalon, which you wouldnt be able to do with the other two, says Dr. Pryor.

The study was funded by Obalons parent company, Obalon Therapeutics, Inc. Dr. Pryor says the device will not likely be covered by insurance at first, and figures were not available for estimated cost to patients.

Studies show that people with BMIs higher than 30 have a 50 to 100 percent greater risk of premature death compared to their healthy-weight peers. And losing just 5 to 10 percent of total body weightthrough diet, exericse, or medical procedureshas been found to significantly improve health.

High-protein diet linked to heart failure in older women

(CNN)Women older than 50 who eat high-protein diets could have a greater risk of heart failure, especially if a lot of their protein comes from meat, according to a new study presented at the annual scientific conference of the American Heart Association.

Researchers found that postmenopausal women who follow a high-protein diet had a significantly higher rate of heart failure than those who ate less protein daily or ate more vegetable protein.

    Americans

This could be attributed to the molecular mechanisms of animal protein, Barbour said, explaining that animal proteins can turn to toxic molecules, which can in turn affect the function of the heart’s left ventricle and lead to heart failure. They can also increase the body mass index, a known risk factor for heart failure.
“Our study should be interpreted with caution,” warned Barbour. “It appears that a high-protein diet may increase the risk of heart failure among postmenopausal women; however, more research will be needed.”

See the latest news and share your comments with CNN Health on Facebook and Twitter.

Dr. Mingyang Song, a researcher at Massachusetts General Hospital and the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, described the findings as interesting. Song was the lead author of research published this year that found replacing animal protein with plant protein in a person’s diet was associated with a decreased risk of death. He was not involved in the new research.
“People who eat high vegetable proteins may also have a healthier lifestyle,” Song said. This may imply that other factors are responsible for lowering the risk of heart failure for that group, he added.
“I think it’ll be good to replicate the results in other studies,” he said, suggesting that a more controlled group with a more controlled food intake could be required for that purpose.

Did Google search data provide a clue to Trump’s shock election victory?

U.S. President-elect Donald Trump speaks at his election night rally in Manhattan, New York, U.S., Nov. 9, 2016. (REUTERS/Carlo Allegri)

Donald Trump spectacularly defied pollsters and pundits on the way to his shock election victory over Hillary Clinton, but Google search data may have hinted that an upset was on the cards.

Google data show that Trump accounted for 55 percent of search views between Nov. 6 and Tuesdays Election Day, after regularly dominating his Democratic rival in search during the final weeks of the campaign.

Data compiled between Nov. 6 and Nov. 8, for example, show Trump winning the Google search battle in the key state of Pennsylvania, where almost every poll predicted a Clinton victory. Trump also dominated search in the battleground states of Florida, Michigan and North Carolina.

READY FOR THE NEXT @POTUS? WHITE HOUSE REVEALS DIGITAL TRANSITION PLAN

The Election Day search numbers should perhaps come as no surprise after announcing his candidacy in June 2015, Trump Google led search for most of the election campaign.

Experts are now weighing the value of search information in providing clues to his eventual upset win. With all these Google searches, people were obviously looking him up for a reason, and they wanted to know before they went to the voting booth, social media expert and President of JRM Comm Jason Mollica, told FoxNews.com. Any political campaign, especially the bigger it gets, needs to look more closely at what people are searching for and where they are searching from.

See the Fox News 2016 battleground prediction map and make your own election projections. See Predictions Map →

Trumps Campaign Manager Kellyanne Conway credited the phenomenon of undercover Trump voters as a factor in the upset win during an interview with Fox & Friends Wednesday. Conway described small but potent force who didnt reveal they planned to vote for the Republican nominee and drew parallels with the so-called “shy voters” who backed the U.K.s shock “Brexit” vote earlier this year.

VOTING IN ORBIT: NASA ASTRONAUT CASTS BALLOT FROM INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION

The fiercely-contested election also sparked intense activity on Twitter, which said that 75 million global Tweets related to #Election2016 were sent out through 3 a.m. ET Wednesday when Trump claimed victory.

Trumps first Tweet as president elect, sent out at 6:36 a.m. ET, has garnered over 154,000 retweets and more than 377,000 likes.

The billionaire made extensive use of Twitter during the campaign, often to explosive effect, which helped pave his way to the White House, according to Ben Kaplan CEO of viral PR firm PR Hacker. A high frequency of controversial tweets and comments made Trump stronger in aggregate because they took over the news cycle while reminding voters he’s a non-establishment outsider (the key message of the election), he explained, in a statement emailed to FoxNews.com. Triggering viral emotions (like anger and anxiety) mattered more than Hillary’s “ground game” and high TV ad spend in driving voter turnout.

Google to label malicious sites as repeat offenders

Google is set to introduce a “Repeat Offender” tag to its Safe Browsing feature.  (Reuters)

Its Googles version of The Scarlet Letter.

The tech giant is set to punish websites violating its Safe Browsing standards by applying a Repeat Offender tag, eweek reported.

The change, announced in a Google blog post on Nov. 8, is set to begin this week for users of Google Chrome and other browsers. The warning will remain in place for a month and only be taken down if Google believes the site no longer poses a threat.

The Repeat Offender tag was developed to combat sites that are intentionally harmful and duplicitous. In the past, those sites would typically remove the security issue after being flagged by Google but just for long enough to get the Safe Browsing warning removed. Then the initial security issue would pop back up.

As a result of this gap in user protection, we have adjusted our policies to reduce risks borne by end-users, Brooke Heinichen, a member of the Safe Browsing Team, wrote in the Google blog post.

Safe Browsing has been available to users on desktop and Android systems since December.

More than 2 billion Internet-connected devices worldwide are protected by Safe Browsing, DigitalTrends reported.

3 Reasons To Add More Protein To Your Diet

Research shows that high-quality protein eaten throughout the day can help with weight loss, according to Dr. Melina Jampolis, who says that protein is the starting point for The Doctor On Demand Diet: Your Prescription For Lasting Weight Loss.

There are three reasons for this:

    1. Protein helps keep your blood sugar stable.
When you eat carbohydrate-containing foods, your body breaks them down into simple sugar (glucose) and sends it into your bloodstream. Your pancreas, an organ located behind your stomach, produces the hormone insulin, whose job it is to usher blood sugar into your cells for energy.

Foods that break down quickly into simple sugars cause a rapid rise in your blood sugar, followed by an equally rapid fall. When blood sugar drops, low blood sugar triggers hunger and dampens your energy level and, often, your mood. This series of events can lead to cravings for sugar and carbohydrates, because sugary foods raise your blood sugar more quickly than other foods. You may have experienced this after eating a high-sugar or high-carb breakfast — a donut, pastry, or bagel with orange juice, for example. Your energy peaked initially due to the large rush of sugar you dumped into your system, but then it dropped just as rapidly, leaving you feeling hungry, low, and craving more sweets.

Our goal in all phases of the Doctor On Demand Diet is to keep blood sugar relatively stable, because that helps you control hunger and cravings. One of the best ways to do this is to include protein in your meals and snacks.

    2. Protein helps control hunger and cravings.
Calorie for calorie, protein is more filling than carbohydrates or fat. Research has shown — and I’ve seen it among my patients as well — that on a higher-protein diet, people eat less and feel fuller than when they eat a high-carb diet. This effect may be especially significant with a higher-protein breakfast.

4 Ways To Boost Your Chances Of Slimming Down

    3. Protein helps you lose the right kind of weight.
Your goal is to lose fat rather than lean muscle. Various studies have shown that diets higher in protein can help you maintain muscle mass and lose more fat (especially belly fat). This is good for your metabolism, because muscle burns more calories than fat. Having less belly fat also improves your health because excess bely fat is associated with several chronic diseases.

I don’t advise you to go overboard on protein, or to think that eating protein means helping yourself to large portions of fatty meats, unlimited amounts of nuts, or large portions of full-fat dairy foods. But because protein helps control hunger and keep blood sugar stable throughout the day, it can help you stick to your healthy eating plan and feel good along the way. That’s why I recommend eating some form of protein with every meal and most of your snacks.

Keeping your secrets safe on Amazon, Google, Facebook and Netflix

    Illustration file picture. (REUTERS/Kacper Pempel/Files)

When a relationship gets serious, we start to share more of our lives. We borrow each others cars. We move in together. Inevitably, we start sharing each others technology and even our passwords.

But your device says a lot about you: Your pastimes, your taste in music, your curiosities and the things you shop for. So how do you maintain your privacy online, even with the people who are closest to you?

Here are a few simple tricks to help you keep your secrets under wraps. (Note: Apps and websites do not always work the same across all devices and operating systems. If something isnt located in the menus precisely as I say, look around for a similar action.)

    Amazon

Amazon tracks not only what you have purchased, but also what you have browsed. If you share an Amazon account, both can pose a major problem especially this time of year.

The good news is that you can easily cover your tracks. To erase your browsing history, from your account settings, look for the Personalization section. Go to Personalized Content >> View and Manage Your Browsing History. Here, you have a few options. You can remove only certain items or all items as well as turn off browsing history, so you never have this issue again.

Lets say you want to make it more difficult for someone to find out what you have ordered. Amazon will not completely delete your order history, but you can archive individual orders. Casual snoops will have a harder time seeing what you have purchased. From your account settings, go to Your Orders. Select the item you wish to hide and select Archive order.

You can use the Amazon app as an additional holiday security measure. Suppose you have purchased a pair of shoes for your spouse, youve archived the order, and now youre waiting for the package to arrive. But youre receiving so many boxes this time of year, how do you know which delivery to open and wrap?

With the Amazon app, you can scan the barcode on the box to immediately find out whats inside. It works like a charm unless your spouse has secretly ordered something for you!

By the way, Amazon has added a slew of new benefits for Prime members from unlimited photo storage to free ebooks. Click here for seven Amazon Prime perks youre probably not using.

    Google

Google often auto-completes your search terms based on personal information, such as your location and previous searches. Anyone looking over your shoulder or borrowing your device might be surprised by the guesses Google makes. Google products that collect your information include Chrome, Google Maps, and YouTube.

To delete your search history on Google, you need a Google account. Just log in, go to My Activity, and remove items individually.

Better yet, take control of the data Google saves about you. Click here for step-by-step instructions on how to stop Google from collecting data about you.

Most browsers have a similarly easy way to delete your browsing history, and the controls tend to be in your browsers preferences. Keep this in mind, especially if youre researching something a little unusual.

    Facebook

For many of us, Facebook is like a sprawling digital yearbook. Maybe you have a family computer, and you usually forget to log out of Facebook. Other people use the same computer, they stumble into your Facebook account, and they notice your conspicuous search history.

Your significant other may wonder why youve become so curious about the person you once invited to the prom, no matter how innocent your interest.

The easiest way to avoid an awkward conversation is to open your Activity Log on your Facebook page. Select More from the column at left >> Search >> Clear Searches. Or you can remove each search item one by one.

Living Alone Is Bad For Your Diet

Living alone has its benefits: You get 100 percent control over Netflix, you can clean (or not) whenever you please and you’re safe to sleep in the buff without fear.

But a recent study from Australia’s Queensland University of Technology revealed a major downside to solo life: People who live alone tend to have worse diets compared to those who share a space.

The research, published in the journal Nutrition Reviews, analyzed 41 previous studies to uncover the link between living alone and food and nutrient intake. Those who live alone are more likely to have a lower diversity of food and nutrients and eat fewer fruits and vegetables, which are packed with vitamins, minerals, fiber and antioxidants that can help protect against certain diseases.

Some of the reasons solo-dwellers were found to be worse off included poor cooking skills, no partner to help with grocery shopping, the high cost of food for one, and a lack of motivation to cook. Solo men were more likely to have an unhealthy diet than women.

“Our results found that people who live alone have a lower diversity of food intake and a lower consumption of some core food groups like fruits and vegetables and fish,” said Katherine Hanna, one of the study’s authors and a lecturer at the university. “The research suggests living alone may represent a barrier to healthy eating that is related to the cultural and social roles of food and cooking.”

Hanna and her colleagues found that people who lived alone not only often lacked the motivation to cook, but they didn’t enjoy eating or cooking alone, and were more likely to prepare simple or ready-made meals lacking important nutrients. At times, it seems, it can be helpful to have a nagging caring partner around.

“The absence of support or encouragement to comply with healthy eating guidelines and difficulty in managing portion control were also factors influencing diet,” Hanna said.

Money also played a role in the diets of single-person households: Healthy foods like fish and fresh fruits and vegetables require more trips to the grocery store and a speedier rate of consumption (if you don’t eat it, it’ll spoil).

Previous research has highlighted that eating home-cooked meals is associated with a lower risk for obesity, heart disease and Type 2 diabetes, but the number of people living on their own in developed countries is increasing. As Hanna noted, in 2010, 23 percent of Australian households included only one person. The trend is similar in the U.S., where 27 percent of the population is living alone.

Cooking for one is not impossible, of course, nor does it have to be time-consuming and expensive. Check out a few of our favorite solo-dining recipes.

There Really Is No ‘One Size Fits All’ Diet Plan, According To Study

Have you ever followed your doctors weight loss nutrition plan to a T, only to stubbornly remain at the exact same weight — or worse, gain weight?

Theres a reason for that, according to an ambitious research project by scientists in Israel. Researchers Eran Elinav and Eran Segal of the Weizmann Institute of Science have just published the results of a large, comprehensive study in the journal Cell that found people can metabolize the exact same foods in very different ways.

What this means is that a healthy diet for one person may not be healthy for another person. Yet doctors all over the world tend to prescribe the same kinds of foods to people struggling with weight or health issues. Rather than recommend a cookie-cutter solution to weight problems, the researchers say, doctors could be more effective by recommending a personalized nutrition plan to a patient, based on the way that patient metabolizes certain foods.

“After seeing this data, I think about the possibility that maybe we’re really conceptually wrong in our thinking about the obesity and diabetes epidemic, Segal said in a statement. “The intuition of people is that we know how to treat these conditions, and it’s just that people are not listening and are eating out of control — but maybe people are actually compliant but in many cases we were giving them wrong advice.”

Some fellow doctors, however, are a bit more skeptical about the pair’s conclusions.

    The Study

To measure how food was digested, Elinav and Segal recruited 800 people and studied them intently over the course of one week. Participants were asked to log every bite, sip, exercise session, bowel movement and sleep session on a phone app. Their blood sugar levels were measured every five minutes by a device attached to their bodies, and they turned in stool samples for gut bacteria analysis. They also gave blood samples and ate a few of the same exact meals for breakfast, so that the scientists could gauge all of the different effects the same food would have on different people.

Using all that data, Elinav and Segal mapped out which foods affected participants blood sugar the most. They used blood sugar as a health risk indicator because the higher blood sugar spikes and the longer it stays elevated, the more likely a person is to develop Type 2 diabetes, obesity and other facets of metabolic syndrome like high blood pressure, fatty liver disease and cardiovascular disease.

What they found was that the participants all responded very differently to foods, even after meals in which participants were eating the same exact provided foods. In the video above, the researchers explain that sushi actually caused one mans blood sugar to spike higher than ice cream did. For another participant who had struggled to lose weight on different diets all her life, the researchers found that eating a seemingly healthy food — tomatoes — spiked her blood sugar.

“Examples are numerous — some participants (in fact most participants) feature a lower glycemic response to bread with butter as compared to bread, despite its higher caloric content, Elinav told The Huffington Post. “Some individuals glucose levels spike to fresh fruit while not spiking on [a] moderate amount of alcohol (a glass of beer); in some individuals pizza produces a large spike, in others it did not.”

The researchers then selected 26 of the participants to see if they could provide personalized nutrition recommendations would bring down the subjects’ blood sugar levels. And indeed, Elinav and Segal were able to lower blood sugar levels after recommending meals made of foods they knew wouldnt spike individual participants blood sugar.

Interestingly, these dietary changes also resulted in a change in gut bacteria in the participants. That may be important because gut bacteria — the billions of microorganisms living in our body — help us by breaking down our food for us in our stomachs and intestines. Past studies have suggested that while weve all got unique communities of bacteria living inside us, depending on our environments and what we inherit, some kinds of bacteria are more helpful than others when it comes to blood sugar, obesity and diabetes. And we can perhaps influence which gut bacteria live in our intestines by eating certain kinds of foods.

    Future Plans

Segal and Elinavs research was funded by general academic grants and they received no commercial funding. But the pair said theyve already licensed their research methods to an outside company to continue building on their findings. They want to develop a service that creates personalized nutrition plans for people with pre-diabetes, diabetes, obesity and other health complications that are linked to nutrition.

For example, because they were able to test their methods on each other, Segal and Elinav have made some personal changes to their own diets now that they know what foods spiked their blood sugar levels. Elinav found that for him, it was best to reduce both bread and beef, while beer seemed to have no effect on his blood sugar. Segal, on the other hand, has to avoid sushi and bread. Happily, he has found desserts that he can eat without guilt.

“I also found out that dark chocolate and ice cream do very little to my sugar levels, and I now eat these on a regular basis, said Segal. Lucky guy.

Unfortunately, until the service launches, Segal and Elinav dont have much advice to give those who want to customize their diet now, except to confirm that there really is no one size fits all diet that would work well for everyone.

    Is it a breakthrough?

Dr. James DiNicolantonio, a cardiovascular research scientist at Saint Lukes Mid America Heart Institute and associate editor of BMJs Open Heart journal, was not involved in the study and is skeptical of Segal and Elinavs results.  He says theres little practical takeaway for patients or health care providers, and questioned their decision to measure blood sugar levels after a meal, as measuring insulin levels after a meal is a more established way of determining whether people are developing insulin resistance that can lead to type 2 diabetes.

Segal and Elinav agree with DiNicolantonio that insulin level measurements would have been helpful, too, but pointed out that only blood sugar levels can be continually measured the way they wanted for the research. They recorded over 2,000 blood sugar levels per participant with the attached device, while pricking a person for a drop of blood 2,000 times to get insulin levels would have been impossible — or at least highly unpleasant, especially while the participants were sleeping.

Dr. Suneil Koliwad, an assistant professor at the University of California, San Francisco Diabetes Center and the Gerold Grodsky Chair in diabetes research, also had concerns about Segal and Elinavs findings. He was wary of the studys reliance on self-reported diet, a method of data collection that’s notoriously inaccurate, especially with people who are obese or have diabetes. He also pointed out a lack of research about what a blood sugar spike may actually mean if, say, it was truly triggered by a healthy food such as a tomato.

But despite the fact Koliwad thought it was premature to be developing a consumer product based on this study, he was much more optimistic about its potential to spur future research that could one day lead to reliable consumer products and services that create personalized health plans in general.

Potentially market ready tools that can be a great service to people who want to prevent obesity, diabetes and cancer, are on the horizon, and its going to be studies just like the one youre asking me about that will lead us to that point, Koliwad told HuffPost. And thats not too far off — Im talking years, not decades, and thats very heartening to all of us who work in the field of metabolism.”

Merck to pay $950 million for illegal marketing of Vioxx

Washington (CNN)Pharmaceutical giant Merck will plead guilty to charges related to illegal promotional activity for the painkiller Vioxx and pay fines and settlement costs totaling nearly a billion dollars, the Justice Department announced Tuesday.

Justice officials said Merck, Sharp and Dohme Corp. has agreed to the massive settlement to resolve criminal charges and civil claims stemming from its promotion and marketing of Vioxx. The drug was withdrawn from the marketplace in September 2004.
Under the agreement, Merck will plead to a misdemeanor charge for the illegal promotion and pay a $321 million criminal fine.
The firm also agreed to a civil settlement under which it will pay $628 million to resolve allegations of off-label marketing and false statements about the cardiovascular safety of Vioxx.
The federal government will receive $426 million from the civil settlement and the remaining $202 million will be distributed to the participating Medicaid states, the Justice Department said.
“When a pharmaceutical company ignores FDA rules aimed at keeping our medicines safe and effective, that company undermines the ability of health care providers to make the best medical decisions on behalf of their patients,” Assistant Attorney General Tony West said.
The FDA approved Vioxx for three medical purposes in 1999 but did not approve its use against rheumatoid arthritis until April 2002. The government says that for nearly three years in the interim, Merck promoted Vioxx for rheumatoid arthritis. An FDA warning letter was sent to Merck in 2001 for making the claims.
Officials say that while this is not a record settlement, the $950 million agreement places it among the top five on record.

For Fertility And Healthy Babies, A Father’s Diet Matters Too

Most conversations about infertility and healthy reproduction tend to focus on the woman, and how things like age, environment and lifestyle factors can affect her ability to give birth to a healthy baby.

But new research is suggesting that the health of the father may play a more significant role that has traditionally been thought. Two new studies, published independently in the journal Science, showed that a father’s diet can powerfully affect his offspring.

In one of the studies, a team of Chinese researchers fed male mice a high-fat diet and then harvested their sperm to impregnate female mice. The offspring of those mice developed impaired insulin resistance and glucose intolerance — both known precursors to diabetes — while the offspring of a control group of mice did not.

A second study conducted by U.S. and Canadian researchers, which ran the same experiment but with a low-protein diet, was less conclusive. The only changes to offspring that the researchers observed were some alterations in genes responsible for stem cell development.

The findings suggest that the DNA contained in sperm isn’t the only impact a father has on his offspring. RNA — a chain of acids whose job is to help carry out the “blueprint” contained in DNA  — may also play a role. In the Chinese experiment, transfer RNAs seemed to carry the information from the father’s diet that later impacted the offspring’s health.

“Traditionally, the male contribution to a child has been thought to be limited to one half of the child’s DNA,” Dr. Oliver Rando, a biochemist at the University of Massachusetts Medical School and one of the study’s authors, told The Huffington Post. “So this general idea that a father’s diet or environment can influence his children’s metabolism or other traits obviously challenges this way of thinking.”

New research also suggests that a prospective father’s diet may affect his fertility. Another recent study found environment and lifestyle factors — including diet and exercise — to be strongly linked to male reproductive health and infertility, potentially playing a role in decreasing birthrates globally.

“I was surprised that we found such poor semen quality among young men ages 20 to 25,” the lead author of that study, Dr. Niels Skakkebaek of the University of Copenhagen, said in a statement. “We found that the average man had more than 90 percent abnormal sperm. … It appears that we are at a tipping point in industrialized countries where poor semen quality is so widespread that we must suspect that it results in low pregnancy rates.”

Skakkebaek and his colleagues concluded that the advancing age of prospective mothers isn’t the only important biological factor in declining pregnancy rates. “The situation is more complex,” he said.

The authors of the studies on mice suggest that if the results are replicated in humans, as they are expected to be, then it may be wise for prospective mothers and fathers to consider their diets leading up to pregnancy.

Thinking of doing a detox diet? Be warned: this is what happens to your body | Brigid Delaney

I did an extreme detox a couple of years ago and was shocked to discover how bad it made me smell. Here are some other unexpected effects

Its that time of year, where after a month or more of the party season, detox diets start appearing in magazines and on websites everywhere you look promising rapid weight loss.

But be warned: I have done it before, and I can tell you what happens to your body and its not pleasant.

A couple of years ago I went on an extreme detox. For two weeks I ate no food, just drank foul-tasting Chinese herbs (imagine the taste of old cigarette butts floating in brackish creek water), then for the following three weeks I ate only small amounts of cucumber and poached chicken.

I lost 14 kilograms, which I put back on over the following two years.

I wont be doing an extreme detox again but if youre considering it, here are some of the weird effects you can expect to experience.

      You will smell

It was day four of no food when I noticed the smell. I was lying in bed with the windows open, and thought, Maaaannn, someone must have left a bag of old chicken carcasses out in the sun. Chicken carcasses and off milk. I closed the window in disgust before realising the smell was coming from me. I smelled like chicken carcasses and sour milk.

Over the following weeks, friends recoiled from me when I hugged them, and I noticed that when I cried, even my tears smelled bad.

      You will be bored

Not shopping for, preparing, eating and cleaning up after a meal means that days are no longer filled with food-related tasks. Without meals, theres no marker or divider so time takes on a different dimension. Theres so much of it!

I avoided food-related socialising while detoxing, so did not spend any time in restaurants or bars. I had nothing to do during the day, which was lucky because I slept a lot (and was being paid by a magazine to write about the diet). I also had no plans at night.

I was bored. Really bored. Each day I went to the detox clinic, got weighed, had some acupuncture and a (very hard) massage. Then Id go home to just … hang. I had no energy to do anything else. When I met people on a rare outing, I was hyperactive. I was so excited to meet a friend in the park one day that I arrived an hour early.

Soon I will see her! I said, looking at my phone, In 43 minutes!

It reminded of that novel on boredom, The Pale King by David Foster Wallace: over the foothills of tedium and boredom lie bliss you just have to wait it out.

First you look bad, and then you look amazing

First, your skin goes blotchy, eyes bloodshot, hair lank, tongue coated, and of course you stink. Then one day you wake up and look in the mirror and theres no other word for how you look: AMAZING.

Years fell off my face. One day I woke up and every single wrinkle I had was gone. My nails were strong, hair shiny, the whites of my eyes luminous. Who was this person? I was afraid, though, that if I kept on not eating, Id look like an infant by Easter.

Your dreams will be particularly vivid

By day five, I felt like I was on heavy sedatives. I could barely do anything except sleep.

When awake, I spent hours staring out the window. I couldnt concentrate enough to read more than a couple of lines of my book. TV programs, even the dumb ones, were too much effort.

But, oh, my dreams! Ive never had such vivid, energetic, horrific dreams thrumming with currents of anxiety. Typically I was trying to get somewhere, running from gate lounge to gate lounge trying to board a flight for my departure to Barkly. Where is Barkly? I dont know but I had to get there.

Days four to seven are really hard

The first couple of days are fine, almost a novelty. I felt too waterlogged from the gross herbs to be properly hungry and I didnt leave the house much so was safe from temptation. There were headaches probably from caffeine withdrawals but they went away after three days.

But by day four, bad moods, boredom, hunger, lack of energy and brain fog were bumming me out. I was no longer able to think very much, about anything at all.

In the second week, things improved considerably, including memory and concentration.

You will only think of food, to the point of obsession

Food preoccupied me like never before. I spent a lot of time thinking about various meals of the past that I have enjoyed. Seeing a picture of pizza on my Twitter feed made me feel so much longing that I couldnt sleep. Its like being horny, times a thousand. I would stop outside restaurants to watch people eat. I licked food, secretly at home, then threw it in the bin. I missed chewing.

When I was out with a friend who was eating hot chips, I snatched one from his plate, licked it and felt it in my mouth, then threw it in the bin without swallowing it. He was disgusted. He also told me that my new gaunt face made me look like a PR chick.

People have strong opinions on detoxing

On day 10 I woke up with chest pains. Am I having a heart attack? I panicked. The pain subsided and I visited my GP who was surprisingly mellow about the fast. He told me that fasting had been around forever and human beings are quite good at it due to long periods of time not catching things in the wilderness. He also said that fasting is good from an ethical perspective because you get to understand what its like to go without food.

Other people thought it was dangerous, despite the fact that the current Australian prime minister Malcolm Turnbull and his wife Lucy did the same program (he lost 13kg). Friends couldnt fathom not eating for that long, and wondered if I might actually die from starvation.

I spoke to a professor from the nutrition school at the Queensland University of Technology who said, When you fast for more than three or four days, all you do is reduce your metabolism.

Stuff comes out of your body

This was a mystery. Why, if I was not eating anything was my body expelling so much STUFF? It was gross. What was it? Where did it come from? A Google search revealed weird pictures of things in toilet bowls that other fasters had taken. It was horrible, yet in that deprived state, strangely compelling.

      You reassess food intake

When I started eating again, I was full after one bean and a tiny piece of fish. It was delicious. I did not need any more food. I thought back to all the times when I needed a snack after two or three hours. I needed it! Well, perhaps I didnt need it.

Googles Real-Time Map of Voter Issues Is Totally Captivating

News junkies will find no shortage of live election coverage on the internet today, but if you’re craving something to distract you from the live blogs and the hot takes, do yourself a favor and check out the this real-time visualization of the issues voters are Googling in cities across America.

Created in collaboration with design studio Pitch Interactive, the map uses real-time data from Google Trends and historical search queries to identify up-to-the-minute interest in what Google says are the five most relevant voting issues: problems with voting machines, long wait times, information on inactive voter and provisional ballot status, and voter intimidation at polling sites. The map distills hundreds of keywords related to these issues into color-coded blips. The bigger the blip, the bigger the gap between national search frequency and the search frequency within the indicated city. (To even register on the map, there needs to be at least twice as much interest locally as there is nationally.) Click on individual issues to turn them on or off. The ticker at the bottom of the screen displays sudden spikes in search interest from around the country.

Put it all together and you have one captivating data visualization. “When it comes to this kind of tool, you have to give people something they understand and want to play with, otherwise it’s not going to tell a story or communicate anything,” says Google News Lab data editor Simon Rogers.

The map also provides a fascinating glimpse at America’s electoral process in action. This year, ProPublica teamed up with Google and hundreds of news organizations to launch a project called Electionland. Its mission: to monitor and report on voting issues across the US. This map is an essential—if experimental—part of that mission.

“This is the first time Google Trends data has been made available in real time during a US election, and it’s really interesting stuff,” Rogers says. For instance: According to the map, the greatest number of searches related to broken voting machines have originated in Rhode Island and Pennsylvania, while search interest in lines peaked in Georgia at 7am, shortly after polls opened.

It’s important to remember that these are just signals—the fact that lots of folks in Anytown, USA are Googling about broken voting machines does not mean that voting machines in Anytown are, in fact, broken. But these signals can serve as early leads, or as ballast for developing stories. “We’re just scratching the surface of what’s possible,” Rogers says. “We’re showing that this data is something that can be used to complement news in a way that wasn’t possible in the past.” To that end, Rogers says there’s a good chance his team will publish data from the trends map on its GitHub account after the election. We hope they do. A good test of the map’s utility would be to go back, after the election, and cross reference the trends data with confirmed reports from election day.

But we’re getting ahead of ourselves. For now, sit back and enjoy obsessing over this map. Polls are only open for a few more hours.

Jessica Simpson’s secret to staying fit: ‘Being a mom is enough of a diet’

Jessica Simpson hit the town Tuesday night in New York City, and the mother of two looked stunning in a curve-hugging dress that showed off the results of her healthy living.

The 35-year-old fashion designer opened up about her fitness regimen when she spoke with ET on the red carpet at the YMA Fashion Scholarship Fund Awards Gala at the Marriott Marquis Hotel, where she was honored with the Future of Fashion Award.

“I think being a mom is enough of a diet,” said Simpson, who brought along her husband, former NFL star Eric Johnson, as her date for the evening.

While the fashion designer and entrepreneur is super busy these days, she says it’s important that she makes her health a priority.

“You have to run around chasing your kids, but I do eat a lot of their corn dogs, so I have to get on the treadmill a lot to watch my TV shows,” Simpson joked.

Simpson also opened up about her children, and whether she and her husband intend on having any more.

Back in November, Simpson told ET there were no plans to expand her family. While that’s still the case, she now seems a bit more open to the idea.

“I don’t think I could have another baby right now. It was a very, very big shock after having a baby and four months later knowing I was pregnant again, so I think that’s not in our near future,” Simpson shared. ” But people have kids at 40 now, so you never know.”

One thing she is planning on is a return to her roots — namely, acting and singing.

“Oh, there’s lots of music and lots of acting coming up in the near future,” Simpson teased. “I have to do it all. I’m like a jack of all trades.”

However, Simpson stressed that, no matter what, she “will never ever, ever put fashion aside.”

Why is everyone freaking out about Chick-fil-A offering diet advice?

Talk about making a mountain out of mole hill.

Chick-Fil-A has a suggestion to help drop those pounds you may have packed on during the holidays. Eat their grilled chicken nuggets.

Kick off the New Year by adding one healthy habit to your routine, the fast food chains bags now read. Heres a good one: Eat smaller meals (like an 8-count pack of grilled nuggets) every three to four hours.

The so-called “Chick-fil-A diet”–as it’s now been come to be called–went viral after SBNation’s Rodger Sherman tweeted out a photo of the bag.

(Another tip on the bag also suggests staying balanced by exercising more.)

Since then the chicken chain has been getting a lot of snaky comments from many who are interpreting that Chick-fil-A is tell you to eat their nuggets 6 times a day. They are not.  (Lets be clear here, were talking the grilled chicken nuggets, not the fried version.)

They’re suggesting you eat a food portion around the same size as their grilled nuggets every three to four hours–and their menu item was an example.

Why they may be doing this is because nutritionists and fitness experts say that eating healthy snacks that are low in calories and fat can improve overall health.

Let’s take a closer look at the nutrition label.

Theyre low in carbs, have 140 calories and 3 grams of fat per serving.

But there is a high amount if you take the chains advice of eating them every three hours. At 530mg per serving, youd likely reach the upper safe limit around 2,300 mg of daily sodium intake every day.

But, lets face it, if youre taking diet advice from a bag of fast food, you may want to think twice.
